Situated at a height of 4255 m, the Gangotri Glacier at Gaumukh is the source of holy Ganga. Gaumukh, which is around 18 Km from Gangotri, is generally accepted as the physical source of the holy river – Ganga. It is said that a shepherd boy discovered this place while searching for his lost sheep. Gaumukh is the place where Gangotri glacier terminates is said to resemble as cow’s mouth in the distant past, therefore called Gaumukh (Gau means cow, and mukh means mouth); though today, it no longer appears so. From Gangotri, you move along the beaten trek towards the tree line from where you can have a clear view of Bhagirathi peak. Further to this, the terrain becomes really desolate and barren; therefore it has been referred to as the Arctic Tundra peak by many trekkers. When you reach Gaumukh and take a detour to Nandavan, you can get the first glimpse of Shilvling peak (in the picture). It is a nice cream cone rising towards the sky. Nandavan is situated at the base of the Bhagirathi group of peaks and can be reached after crossing the Gangotri glacier. Nestled in the shadow of the Bhagirathi peaks, Nandanvan is an alpine meadow.
