This glacier Gaumukh is the source of holy Ganga. Almost 18 Km from Gangotri, Gaumukh is generally accepted as the physical source of the holy river – Ganga. It is said that a shepherd boy discovered this place while searching for his lost sheep. Gaumukh is the place where Gangotri glacier terminates is said to resemble as cow’s mouth in the distant past, therefore called Gaumukh (Gau means cow, and mukh means mouth); though today, it no longer appears so. From Gangotri, you move along the beaten trek towards the tree line from where you can have a clear view of Bhagirathi peak.
